The new Odysseys

Islands Odyssey
Crossing the pond in easy stages

1 October 2015  Lanzarote – Fuerteventura – Gran Canaria – Tenerife – La Gomera – La Palma – El Hierro – Sao Vicente (Cape Verde)
 3 November 2015  Sao Vicente – Barbados – Martinique

Barbados is our alternative Caribbean destination that can be reached from the Canaries by joining the Islands Odyssey.

This step by step rally calls at all the Canary Islands before sailing south to Sao Vicente, in the Cape Verdes, and from there picks up the shortest trade wind route to Barbados and continues to Martinique.

Jimmy Cornell has launched this new rally tailored for sailors who prefer to cross the Atlantic at a relaxed pace.

Canaries Odyssey
A moving panorama of the Fortunate Isles

1 December 2015 Lanzarote – Fuerteventura – Gran Canaria – Tenerife – La Gomera – La Palma – El Hierro

Few sailors who stop in the Canaries bound for the Caribbean visit more than one or two of these interesting islands, every one of which has its own character.

Over a three-week period this inter-island rally starting in Lanzarote will give participants a unique opportunity to visit every one of the seven major islands of the archipelago. Shore excursions to the highlights of each island will be organised at every stopover.

New destinations

Sao Vicente

Conveniently placed on the trade winds route to the Caribbean, the Cape Verdes have been a favourite stopover for the sailing ships of yesteryear, a tradition now continued by modern yachts. The opening of a new marina in Mindelo, on Sao Vicente Island, has considerably enhanced their attraction, due to a good range of repair facilities, provisioning and access to international flights.

Barbados

“Gateway to the Caribbean” is an apt description of this island set to windward of all other islands and thus the most convenient Caribbean landfall. Visiting boats normally anchor in Carlisle Bay west of the capital Bridgetown. Participants in the Islands Odyssey will be docked in the centrally located Careenage, a former fishing harbour. A premier tourist destination, Barbados has a good range of international flights.

What some Odyssey participants are saying

Isabelle Lachapelle, Fleur de Sel

We remember fondly the good time we had in Lanzarote with all the moral and practical help from Jimmy and his team to prepare us for the big jump.

Justin and Trish McDonagh, Selkie

Having participated in such a family focused rally we would strongly encourage any family to first consider joining the Odyssey over all other alternatives.

About the Odysseys

  • All our Odysseys have the aim of returning to the original non-competitive and non-commercial spirit of Jimmy Cornell’s earlier rallies, with the emphasis on safety and the enjoyment of participating in a purely amateur event.
  • Reflecting the growing concern for the state of the oceans, participants will carry the message ‘One ocean, one future’. During their voyage, they will be engaged in oceanographic and meteorological research programs under the auspices of UNESCO-IOC.
  • Participants in any of the rallies pay a modest entry fee, and benefit from free docking before the start and after the finish, discounted fees for longer stays, reduced haulout fees and individual tracking on the rally website. All these incentives are thanks to generous sponsors on both sides of the Atlantic.
