Welcome Aboard to our First Pacific Odyssey Entry

LOVESAIL about to leave Santa Cruz in the Canary Islands, January 2012, headed for the Eastern Caribbean. Four out of these five sailors should be on the Odyssey.

British-flagged Lovesail, a Lagoon 410 catamaran, owned by Mark Buxton, is the first confirmed entry in the inaugural Pacific Odyssey. Lovesail will take the start from Martinique on 11 January 2015 and head for the San Blas islands before transiting the Panama Canal into the Pacific.

Yachts will also be starting with the Pacific Odyssey from Miami on 28 December 2014, alongside the Blue Planet Odyssey fleet, and will sail via Havana to greet the New Year in the Cuban capital. In the San Blas Islands they will join those who started from Martinique.

After a week cruising the San Blas archipelago, home to the Guna community, preparations for the transit of the Panama Canal will be completed at Shelter Bay Marina. Shelter Bay is a convenient Place to prepare the boat and crew for the onward passage to the Galapagos Islands. A 3000 mile long passage will then take the boats to the Marquesas, with landfall at Atuona on the island of Hiva Oa.

The Pacific Odyssey is an annual event and the first edition will be run as part of the Blue Planet Odyssey, a round the world event aimed at raising awareness of the effects of climate change. Mark’s daughter Lucy will be sailing aboard, a marine biologist specialising in the effect of atmospheric carbon on coral reefs, and we hope she’ll be able to contribute her expertise when the Odysseys visit those parts of the world where coral reefs are under threat.

The Pacific Odyssey gives sailors a wonderful opportunity to enjoy those must-do destinations, the Panama Canal and the Galapagos, without the hassle of red tape. On top of this, the entry fee includes

  • Free docking in all ports on the route of the Pacific Odyssey for
participants who sign up for the entire route
  • Cruising permits for San Blas and Panama
  • All fees relating to the transit of Panama Canal
  • All fees charged to visiting cruising yachts in Galapagos
